Climate
Change threatens the health and safety of everyone, regardless of your
location- whether you life in an urban area, rural area or on an Island, the
anthropogenic impacts of climate change are posing serious threat to our
survivability on Earth.
Based
on scientific studies and research by experts, it is proven that humans are
increasingly influencing climate change and earth temperature by burning fossil
fuel - which is responsible for 64% of green house gases emitted into the
atmosphere. Unsustainable cutting of rain forest and shifting cultivation is responsible
for 17 % of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Some
gases in the Earth's atmosphere act a bit like the glass in a greenhouse,
trapping the sun's heat and stopping it from leaking back into space.
Many
of these gases occur naturally, but human activity is increasing the
concentrations of some of them in the atmosphere, in particular:
carbon dioxide (CO2)
methane
nitrous oxide
fluorinated gases
With
these causes, basic necessities will consequently be disrupted considering the
three indicators of climate change; Erratic rainfall (Floods), High Temperature
(Heavy Heat), and Drought. These indicators show that climate change is real
and its health impact is devastating if we don’t reduce our footprints and act
now to mitigate its health impacts by the use of renewable energy and
reforestation.
Climate
change impacts distrust basic necessities like food, air and water – which play
a significant role in sustaining our health but with climate change indicators,
hunger and famine will increase as food production is destabilized by drought.
Pollution and pollen seasons leading to more allergies and asthma, warmer water
and flooding will increase exposures to diseases in drinking water and
recreations. (WHO info graphic on Climate Change)
Humans
are part of the problem we are confronted with today and the good news is that
we are the solutions. Let’s roll our sleeves and join the thousands of people
around the world to spread the message by educating people about climate change
causes impacts and solutions.
Climate
change has local causes but global consequences and if nothing is done between
2030 to 2050, climate change is expected to cause 250,000 deaths per year due
to malaria, malnutrition, diarrhea and heat stress. May God save us from
the harm of this world!!!
